Paramedics Deliver Baby on Delta Flight Just Before Portland Landing

Paramedics Help Passenger Deliver Baby Midair Moments Before Landing in Portland

A pregnant passenger aboard a Delta Air Lines flight from Atlanta gave birth just minutes before the plane landed at Portland International Airport on Friday night, marking a dramatic and heartwarming emergency delivery at 30,000 feet.

Ashley Blair, a Tennessee native en route to Oregon to be with her mother for the birth, went into labor about half an hour before touchdown. The newborn, named Brielle Renee Blair, arrived healthy and weighing 5 1/2 pounds, nearly two weeks ahead of schedule and approximately 20 minutes before the plane’s scheduled arrival.

Onboard Paramedics Leap Into Action Without Standard Medical Supplies

Two paramedics, Tina Fritz and Kaarin Powell, who were returning from vacation in the Dominican Republic, responded immediately after being called by flight attendants. Already assisting a nurse with another passenger in distress, the paramedics found Blair in active labor with contractions intensifying.

With a full flight carrying 153 passengers—soon to be 154—the paramedics quickly cleared space around Blair by moving nearby passengers back to their seats. Despite requests, no obstetrical kit or sterile tools were available, forcing them to improvise using blankets handed out by fellow travelers and a shoelace from a flight attendant to tie the umbilical cord.

In an extraordinary moment of quick thinking, Powell tore a shoelace from her own shoe to start an emergency IV tourniquet as Blair’s contractions accelerated.

Baby Delivered Just as Plane Touches Down

With the landing gear touching down, flying attendants urged the paramedics to be seated as the Boeing 737 was about to land. Fritz and Powell refused, knowing delivery was imminent. Blair pushed three strong times before baby Brielle was safely born on the cabin floor.

Powell quickly cut the umbilical cord, wrapping the newborn in blankets, while Fritz cradled the baby during taxi to the gate. “Baby pinked up right away,” Fritz recalled, confirming Brielle’s strong first breaths.

Response Teams Find Both Mother and Baby Healthy

Portland Airport Fire & Rescue crews met the plane and confirmed both mother and daughter were healthy and stable before transporting them to a local hospital for further observation. The Port of Portland spokesperson Molly Prescott praised the swift actions, saying, “The new family was safely transported and doing well.”

Delta Airlines released a statement expressing gratitude to the crew and medical volunteers onboard, but the paramedics involved clarified there was no doctor present and only one nurse, who was occupied with another passenger.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the crew and medical volunteers on board who stepped in to provide care to a customer onboard prior to landing in Portland. The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority, and we wish the new family all the best,” Delta stated.

Emotional Aftermath and Ongoing Connection

Fritz described a lasting bond with Ashley Blair, sharing how the mother has been overwhelmed by the media attention but grateful for the support during such an intense moment. “I feel like we’re friends now forever,” she said.

This remarkable midair birth adds to a rare but impactful list of babies born onboard US flights, underscoring the unpredictable nature of emergencies in the skies and the heroic efforts of passenger paramedics and crew members.
