Layton Police Hunt Suspect After Shocking Unprovoked Gas Station Attack

Layton Police Seek Suspect in Violent Gas Station Attack on Man Walking Dogs

Layton, UT — Authorities are actively searching for a dangerous suspect following a sudden and brutal assault on a man walking his dogs outside a Chevron gas station on Hill Field Road and Antelope Drive on the evening of April 28. The attack caught local officials and witnesses off guard due to its unprovoked and aggressive nature.

The victim called 911 in a panic, reporting he was being chased and attacked. Lieutenant Clint Bobrowski of the Layton Police Department confirmed that the suspect, described as a man in a green hoodie, approached the victim shouting angrily before launching an unexpected physical assault.

Surveillance video obtained by authorities and local outlet 2News captures chilling moments of the suspect running toward the victim and attempting to kick one of his dogs. The victim tried to retreat, but the suspect charged him and punched him multiple times, igniting a physical struggle.

“The victim stated that while walking his dogs, the unknown male was upset and began screaming at him. The suspect then rapidly approached and attacked,” said Lieutenant Bobrowski. During the fight, the victim tried to defend himself and was able to use one of his dogs to bite the attacker.

In a desperate bid for self-defense, the victim reportedly produced a knife, but the suspect wrestled it from his grasp and fled the scene. The stolen knife was taken by the suspect as he disappeared down the street toward the nearby Quail Cove Apartments.

Bobrowski emphasized that this incident is highly unusual for the Layton community, describing it as “an isolated event” and reassuring the public that there is no ongoing threat to neighborhood safety.

Local Residents Shocked by Random Violence

Community members familiar with the area expressed disbelief and concern over the violent episode. Layton resident Ko-Ko Kabwasa told The California Herald, “I walk my dog here at all hours and never had issues. It’s scary to see such aggression suddenly appear.”

“And then to attack the man’s dogs—what did that even achieve?” Kabwasa added, highlighting the senselessness of the assault.

Police Request Public Help Without Approaching Suspect

The Layton Police Department has released the surveillance footage and is urging anyone who recognizes the suspect to contact them immediately at 497-8300, referencing case number L26-10572. Residents are strongly advised not to confront the suspect directly.

Law enforcement officials continue their investigation while emphasizing vigilance but cautioning against alarm. The manhunt for the suspect remains active as officers comb the area for new leads.

Why This Matters to California and Beyond

Random violent acts like this one, even in smaller communities, highlight deepening concerns about unpredictable public safety threats across the US, including California. As Californians increasingly prioritize safe outdoor activities like dog walking, incidents of unprovoked attack shake community trust and raise awareness for increased vigilance and rapid law enforcement response.

The incident also underscores the importance of timely public cooperation with law enforcement in identifying violent offenders, especially those who escalate situations by stealing weapons.

What to Watch For

Layton police have pledged to provide updates as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, residents nationwide are reminded to keep their phones accessible, report suspicious activity immediately, and maintain personal safety precautions during routine outdoor excursions.

The California Herald will monitor this developing story and deliver updates as new information emerges.
