Iowa Women’s Wrestling Prepares for Historic NCAA Championships

UPDATE: The inaugural NCAA National Championships for women’s wrestling are set to take place on March 6-7 at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. With a stellar dual record of 14-1 this season, the Iowa Hawkeyes are among 52 programs competing for the coveted national title.

In a press conference held earlier today, officials and athletes expressed their excitement for this groundbreaking event, which will showcase 180 student-athletes from six NCAA Regional Qualifiers. “We’re very, very excited about this event,” said Luke Eustice, Director of the Iowa City Area Sports Commission. “We think we’ll do a really good job. The NCAA has been great.”

Among those participating are star wrestlers like Kylie Welker from Iowa, who is undefeated this season with a record of 17-0 and is seeded first in the 180-pound category. Welker, who recently secured her spot at the championships, emphasized the significance of this moment, stating, “I think it’s really special… we continue to make history and bring barriers down.”

Welker will face off against Genevieve An of Lehigh in her opening match on Friday. Coaches and athletes alike are focused on making the most of this historic opportunity.
