Edgartown Council on Aging Rolls Out Robust May Schedule for Seniors

Edgartown, MA – The Edgartown Council on Aging is delivering a powerful lineup of activities and health services this May to address the immediate needs and interests of local seniors and residents.

Directed by Lyndsay Famariss, the community hub known as The Anchors will be closed Monday, May 25th in observance of Memorial Day, but the rest of the month is packed with vital programs designed to promote wellness, social engagement, and education for Edgartown’s aging population.

Health and Wellness Events Take Center Stage

Starting with weekly fitness, attendees can participate in seated yoga on Mondays at 9:30am and yoga with Carol Vega on Tuesdays at 9am. Expert-led Tai Chi classes begin Wednesday mornings with Nan Doty and introductory sessions on Thursdays.

The Council is also offering vital health services this month including a Wellness Clinic and blood pressure checks on May 5, 12–1pm, and hearing assessments provided by Shawn Woodbrey on May 13, available by appointment. Senior grooming is covered with “Cuts for Seniors” by Dee Dee on May 11 and 18, offering haircuts for $20 or cut and blow dry for $30.

Transportation and Social Support Ramp Up

Reliable transportation is critical for seniors, and the Edgartown Council on Aging is stepping up with a twice-weekly shopping shuttle every Tuesday and Friday. The bus picks up residents at home and ferries them to essential stops, including Stop & Shop, pharmacies, and the ECOA center. Registration is required by Friday noon for Tuesday rides and Wednesday noon for Friday trips.

Social engagement remains a priority with a full slate of bridge games Mondays and Wednesdays, Mah Jongg sessions Tuesdays and Fridays, knitting groups, and men’s groups hosted on Friday mornings.

Cultural and Educational Programs Highlight May

The Council is enriching the community with unique cultural programs such as pianist Adele Dreyer’s “Keys to Spring” performance on May 14 at 1pm, and guitarist David Mintz’s “Great American Songbook” show on May 29 during lunch, supported by a cultural council grant.

Additional programming includes “Coffee with a Cop” on May 12 at 11am to foster community-police relations, and informative sessions like residential exemption process explained by Patti Roads of the Edgartown Surveyors Office on May 19 during lunch.

Advocacy and education for people with vision impairments are addressed with an information session by Rhonda Garan of Sight Loss Services Cape Cod on May 26, 11am-1pm.

Special Screenings and Tech Support Offer Immediate Help

On May 22 at 2pm, the Council will host a screening of the PBS documentary “Aging in America: Survive or Thrive” followed by a live Zoom discussion, offering seniors insights into aging challenges and opportunities nationwide.

Residents can also take advantage of drop-in technology help with Rizwan Malik on May 22, ensuring connectivity and digital literacy remain accessible to all.

Community Birthday Bash and Board Meeting

The month’s celebrations include a Birthday Café on May 15 at noon to honor May-born community members, alongside the ECOA Board meeting the same morning at 8:30am to discuss ongoing services and improvements.

Immediate Impact for California and US Seniors

Though based on Martha’s Vineyard, the Edgartown Council on Aging’s comprehensive model highlights the importance of integrated health, transportation, and cultural supports—issues resonating across aging communities in California and nationwide. Efforts to combine fitness, medical screenings, social connection, and local government collaboration serve as a blueprint for senior care amid growing demographic shifts.

Seniors in California and across the U.S. can draw inspiration and urgency from Edgartown’s proactive approach as aging populations require expanded resources now more than ever.
