Henderson Unveils Ambitious Parks Master Plan for Community Enhancement

Local leaders in Henderson, Kentucky, have unveiled details of their comprehensive Parks Master Plan, titled “Turning the Page.” The initiative, presented at a city meeting on March 15, 2024, aims to enhance recreational spaces throughout the community. City officials emphasized that this extensive plan has been in development for over a year and a half, with over 100 pages outlining major and minor projects intended to benefit residents.

The primary goal of this master plan is to create new parks and upgrade existing ones, particularly focusing on Atkinson Park. Proposed additions include new playgrounds, a swimming pool, a zip line, and facilities for pickleball, as well as a dedicated veterans park. City officials believe the enhancements will significantly improve the community’s recreational offerings.

John Bucher, senior planner for the project, expressed optimism about the community’s response. “A lot of it will be really popular for the residents of the city,” Bucher stated. “Some of those things are improvements to what they already have, and some are entirely new ideas. I feel like there’s several things in there that people are going to get really excited about.”

This project marks a historic moment, as it is the first time Henderson has developed a parks master plan. The city has also appointed a new parks director and expanded the parks board to include more members. Mayor Brad Staton highlighted the plan’s focus on inclusivity, ensuring that parks cater to all age groups. “One of the first things we want to do is take a look at what is existing in Henderson and make it better,” Staton remarked. He noted features like a new zip line course and high ropes activities designed to engage both older children and adults.

Officials describe the Parks Master Plan as a “living document,” indicating that it may evolve over time as new ideas emerge and current plans may be revised. City Manager Dylan Ward emphasized the positive implications for both residents and the local economy. “When a lot of new businesses look to come in and plant roots in a community, one of the first things they look at are their parks,” Ward explained. “For us, it’s really important to provide the best amenities we can for our citizens.”

Ward noted that while many of the larger projects will require significant funding and time, smaller initiatives could commence as soon as next month. Examples include replacing trash cans and planning for ongoing maintenance. The city plans to seek grants and budget requests to finance these developments rather than relying solely on taxpayer dollars.

As the community awaits the implementation of this ambitious plan, local leaders remain committed to enhancing Henderson’s recreational spaces, ensuring they evolve alongside the changing needs of the population. This initiative not only aims to improve the quality of life for residents but also positions Henderson as an attractive destination for potential businesses and newcomers.
