Durango Girls Lacrosse Crushes Santa Fe Prep 13-2 in Powerful Senior Night Performance
The Durango High School girls lacrosse team delivered an emphatic response to their largest defeat of the season, dominating Santa Fe Prep with a 13-2 win on senior night. This resounding victory came less than a week after their tough loss to Palmer Ridge, showcasing the Demons’ resilience and talent in full force.
The game, played on Friday night at Durango’s home field, saw the Demons strike fast and aggressively, never relinquishing control. Strong defensive pressure and sharp stick checks kept Santa Fe’s offense off balance, while Durango capitalized on every transition opportunity to build a commanding 7-goal halftime lead.
Senior Night Stars Deliver
The Demons’ seniors made their mark as well, contributing key goals and leadership that energized the team. Head coach Eric Elliot proudly noted, “I think I’m undefeated on senior nights and so is the team, so that’s pretty good.” Durango’s 8-3 overall record improved with this victory, while Santa Fe Prep remains winless at 0-2.
Junior attack Indie Eaton led the charge with an electric four goals and two assists. Freshman Janelle Dingler showed maturity beyond her years, tallying three goals and three assists. Senior Taylor Babcock added another three goals and an assist, highlighting the senior class’s impact alongside fellow senior Scarlett Ramsey, who scored her second goal of the season in the final quarter.
Defensive Mastery and Lightning Transitions Set the Tone
Durango’s defense was relentless, led by junior goaltender Jody Holden, whose six saves were crucial in keeping Santa Fe’s offense at bay. Sophomore Keelyn Reynolds was a game-changer, disrupting the Griffins’ passing lanes and forcing turnovers that ignited fast breaks. Coach Elliot praised Reynolds’ instincts, saying, “It’s that hockey player mentality… she’s anticipating the pass and jumping in front of it.”
The Demons raced out of the gate with three goals in the opening four minutes, quickly setting an aggressive tempo. Eaton struck first from the left side, and Dingler followed up with two more, pushing the early lead to 3-1. Though Santa Fe’s keeper made several close-range stops, Durango’s constant pressure and transition play proved overwhelming.
Control Maintained Through Second Half
The pace slowed after the initial flurry, but Durango continued to dominate possessions and control the game. The Demons kept Santa Fe from finding offensive rhythm, steadily increasing their lead to 11-2 entering the final quarter. Durango seniors shone brightest in the closing period, with Babcock assisting Eaton’s goal and Ramsey adding a powerful score to seal the victory.
The postgame senior night ceremony celebrated the efforts of Babcock, Laurel Dondlinger, and Ramsey, all pivotal leaders on and off the field. Elliot reflected, “Their leadership is amazing. We have 10 new players with just one returning from last year, and thanks to the senior class, it’s hard to tell who’s new.”
Looking Ahead
Following this momentum-building win, Durango prepares to face Telluride at home on Wednesday at 4 p.m. With confidence soaring after their dominant senior night, the Demons appear ready to contend strongly for the remainder of the season.
