UPDATE: A powerful wave of community spirit washed over Brockport, N.Y., as residents gathered for a heartwarming free Thanksgiving feast at the Jubilee Christian Church on November 27, 2025. This event, happening just before a significant lake snow warning set to affect the area from 1 AM Thursday through 1 AM Saturday, provided warmth and connection to those in need.
As temperatures drop and snow accumulates, the importance of this gathering is heightened. The Thanksgiving meal not only serves as a warm meal but also fosters a sense of belonging for individuals facing economic strain and loneliness. Senior Pastor Emelio Sebastian emphasized the mission of the church: “It just gives us a chance to help others. That’s what we wanna do.”
For several years, the Jubilee Christian Church has been a beacon of hope for many, providing free meals to local residents. Pastor Sebastian noted, “We continue to do it ’cause there’s a great need. I mean, there’s a lot of loneliness… turkeys are expensive, and sometimes people can’t afford to buy.”
Community member Katie Miller attended the feast for the first time, expressing her gratitude: “I’m very happy and very grateful for being here… I wanted to be around joyful people and happy.”
Volunteer Tami Raco, who has dedicated her time to this event for three years, stated, “I love it. It’s one of my favorite things… there would be no other place I want to be on Thanksgiving than right here serving.”
The church’s administration, represented by Robin Krueger, highlighted the significance of bringing together seniors who may lack family connections in the area. “They actually sign up at the same time with all their friends and can come in here and have a family Thanksgiving together,” Krueger explained.
The gathering at Jubilee Christian Church is not just about food; it’s about community, love, and support during a time when many are struggling. Pastor Sebastian concluded, “We’re here to be a blessing to the people of, not just Brockport, but we even have other churches here today to help us.”
As Brockport braces for snow, this Thanksgiving celebration stands as a reminder of the power of community and compassion. With the ongoing need for connection and support, local residents and volunteers alike are encouraged to continue fostering this spirit beyond the holiday season.
