Urgent: Smoke Detector Saves Wilkes-Barre Family from Blaze

BREAKING: A fire erupted at a residence on Dana Street in Wilkes-Barre on November 24, 2025, but a functioning smoke detector saved the lives of the family inside. The blaze broke out around 9 a.m., prompting an urgent response from local fire crews who worked tirelessly to contain the flames.

Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney confirmed that firefighters faced significant challenges due to the home’s slate roof, which complicated the firefighting efforts. “The slate roof was our worst enemy,” Delaney stated. “It was a real labor-intensive fire.” Despite the difficulties, swift action from the fire department ensured that everyone inside the home was safe.

Homeowner Carolina Brito reported that the fire likely originated in the back of the attic, but the cause remains unknown. Brito, who has lived in the home for 15 years, expressed her devastation, particularly as she had planned to host a Thanksgiving gathering just days away. “I had the turkey in the refrigerator and everything,” she lamented. “So, we won’t be able to do it, not in this house.”

Brito was home with her son while her husband was in Florida at the time of the incident. Fortunately, all family members, including their pet dog and rabbit, were rescued unharmed. The home sustained significant damage but was not completely destroyed, thanks in large part to the early warning provided by the smoke detector.

“Thankfully, there was a working smoke alarm that alerted the family of the fire,” Delaney noted. The fire department’s quick response played a crucial role in preventing a greater tragedy.

As the investigation continues into the fire’s cause, residents are reminded of the critical importance of having functional smoke detectors in homes.

Authorities report that the family is now looking for assistance as they navigate the aftermath of this devastating incident. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
