Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) has significantly expanded its medical transport capabilities through the acquisition of Nelson Ambulance Services and its affiliates, which include Access Ambulance Service, Connecticut Handivan, and The Limo Group. This strategic purchase aims to enhance patient care and streamline transport services in the region.
The integration of Nelson Ambulance Services was celebrated at a recent event held at the company’s North Haven facility on Quinnipiac Avenue. During the celebration, Christopher O’Connor, CEO of YNHHS, emphasized the organization’s commitment to improving services for the communities it serves. “YNHHS is always looking for opportunities to grow and strengthen services to better meet the needs of the patients and communities we serve,” he stated. O’Connor added that the acquisition will create a more seamless and integrated experience for patients throughout their care journey.
YNHHS and Nelson leaders have collaborated closely over the past few months to develop a transition plan that ensures continuity of care for existing patients. The acquisition is expected to broaden access for Nelson’s current patients while bolstering medical transport in the area.
As part of the agreement, YNHHS will maintain emergency transport services currently offered by Nelson’s hubs in North Haven and Milford. The health system will also continue its collaboration with Nelson’s existing partners to provide uninterrupted care. “Many people have a business but can never take it to the next level – we were able to exceed our expectations,” said Saleem Khan, president of Nelson Ambulance Services and its affiliate transportation companies. He expressed gratitude for the enhanced resources and support available through YNHHS, which he believes will propel the ambulance and medical transport division to new heights.
This acquisition comes on the heels of YNHHS’s ongoing efforts to enhance its service offerings. In September 2023, YNHHS reached a settlement with Prospect Medical Holdings for $45 million regarding the sale of Waterbury, Rockville General, and Manchester Hospitals. This settlement concluded a lengthy legal dispute between the two entities.
The recent release of the newest Connecticut Statewide EMS Protocols in October 2023 further underscores the importance of robust emergency medical services in the region. YNHHS operates five hospitals: Bridgeport, Greenwich, Lawrence + Memorial, Westerly, and Yale New Haven Hospitals, along with several specialty networks and the Northeast Medical Group, which includes numerous community-based and hospital-employed physicians.
Through this acquisition, YNHHS is positioning itself to not only enhance its medical transport services but also to solidify its role as a vital healthcare provider in Connecticut.
