Northern Express Company Plans Expansion Amid Business Surge

On November 24, 1899, the Grand Forks Herald reported a significant business surge for the Great Northern Express Company, which has nearly doubled its operations in Grand Forks over the past year. The company plans to relocate its office in the spring to accommodate increased demand and improve service quality.

Business Growth and Service Enhancements

According to a conversation with an employee of the Great Northern Express Company, the office has recorded a substantial rise in its business activities since January. For instance, receipts in July reached $7,168.00, a remarkable increase from $4,718.00 in the same month of the previous year. This growth underscores the healthy business climate in the area.

The Grand Forks office has been recognized as one of the best on the Great Northern system, particularly impressive given the city’s size. Currently, the office operates with just two wagons, the same number utilized when the business volume was significantly lower. This limited capacity has led to less than satisfactory service during peak times, prompting plans to add another wagon by spring.

Planned Relocation and Upgrades

The lease for the company’s current premises, located next to the St. John’s block, is set to expire in May. The company is exploring a potential move to a more suitable location, possibly to a building owned by Captain Powers next to Stanchfield’s clothing store on Third Street. This new site may also house a ticket and express office, further enhancing customer convenience.

If the relocation proceeds, the company plans to install new fixtures and additional amenities, positioning the new office as one of the finest on the line. Considering the volume of business generated in Grand Forks, this move appears justified; the current facilities, particularly during winter, have proven inadequate due to cold conditions.

As the Great Northern Express Company prepares for this transition, the community anticipates improvements in service and capacity, essential for meeting the growing demands of its clientele.
