The Memphis Grizzlies have announced the signing of guard Kobe Bufkin through a 10-day hardship exception, according to ESPN. This decision comes as the team grapples with a series of injuries that have sidelined key players, including Ja Morant, Scotty Pippen Jr., Brandon Clarke, and Ty Jerome, for several weeks. Additionally, Jaren Jackson Jr. has been unavailable recently due to an ankle sprain.
Following a difficult start to the season, the Grizzlies managed to improve their record to 6-11 after securing their second consecutive victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night. Bufkin is expected to make his debut in the upcoming home game against the Denver Nuggets on Monday.
Bufkin’s Path to Memphis
Bufkin, selected as the 15th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, has been playing with the Los Angeles Lakers’ South Bay G League team. During his time in the G League this season, he has showcased his skills, averaging 22 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5 assists over two games.
Before his stint with the Lakers, Bufkin spent his first two NBA seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. In the offseason, he was traded to the Brooklyn Nets but was subsequently waived after training camp.
The Grizzlies’ current roster challenges have prompted this move, as they seek to bolster their lineup during a critical stretch of the season. The team will hope Bufkin can provide an immediate impact as they navigate a tough schedule ahead. As they continue to deal with injuries, the addition of a player with Bufkin’s potential could make a significant difference in their performance on the court.
