The Morning Call has launched its 26th annual Be an Angel campaign, aiming to support individuals and families in need throughout the Lehigh Valley. With many facing difficulties due to rising costs of living, this initiative seeks to connect generous donors with local nonprofit organizations that provide essential services.
The holiday season often encourages reflection on gratitude and community. Yet, for many, this year presents challenges as prices for basic necessities continue to climb. Local nonprofits are feeling the strain as they work to meet the increasing demands for food, shelter, healthcare, and education. According to the Lehigh Conference of Churches in Allentown, rising costs and reduced government funding have made it harder for these organizations to serve their communities effectively.
As the Be an Angel campaign commences, residents are encouraged to contribute, even in small ways. The campaign’s wish list, available at mcall.com/beanangel, outlines specific needs from local organizations. In September, these nonprofits submitted their top three wishes, which now form a comprehensive list of items and services required to help those they serve.
In recognition of the busy holiday season, the campaign has extended the donation deadline until January 1, 2026. Each contribution, regardless of size, plays a vital role in supporting families and individuals facing challenging circumstances. Over its 25-year history, the Be an Angel campaign has raised nearly $6.2 million in donations. Last year alone, contributors provided more than $275,400 in tangible goods.
The impact of previous campaigns has been profound. Donors have helped feed, clothe, and shelter homeless individuals, supported medical care for the sick, and provided educational tools to schools. Volunteers have also played a crucial role, often considered the most valuable contribution by organizations, as their time and effort cannot be quantified.
Local food pantries, such as the Northern Lehigh Food Pantry and Parkland C.A.R.E.S Food Bank, have highlighted their urgent needs. Items like laundry detergent, personal care products, and gift cards for essential supplies are crucial for assisting families struggling to make ends meet. The Allentown Area Ecumenical Food Bank has also expressed a need for volunteers to help with food drives and fundraising efforts.
Amarelis Rodriguez, a representative from the Lehigh Conference of Churches, stated, “So many families and individuals are feeling the impact of rising costs and limited resources. Donations give us the opportunity to meet people where they are, offering hope, help, and a reminder that they’re not alone.” The organization is seeking thick blankets, sleeping bags, and winter clothing for individuals experiencing homelessness.
New Bethany in Bethlehem, which serves the homeless population, has requested winter camping supplies and durable sleeping bags rated for extreme temperatures. Similarly, Helping Hands Ministry in Emerald is in need of a commercial food vacuum sealer and monetary contributions to purchase a refrigerator truck.
In addition to specific items, some organizations are looking for gently used donations. Community Bikeworks in Allentown, for example, accepts bicycles of any condition for their Earn a Bike program, which allows at-risk youth to learn bicycle repair while earning a bike. Other organizations, like the Community Music School, are seeking musical instruments to provide students unable to afford them.
The campaign also emphasizes the importance of volunteerism, encouraging individuals to lend their skills to local agencies. The Northampton County 4-H Center is currently looking for volunteers to assist with carpentry and painting services.
The Be an Angel campaign exemplifies the community spirit of the Lehigh Valley, showing that collective efforts can make a significant impact. Rodriguez remarked, “It truly takes a community coming together to support those facing challenging times.”
As the holiday season approaches, individuals are encouraged to consider how they can contribute to making a difference in the lives of their neighbors. By participating in the Be an Angel campaign, residents can help foster hope and support within their community.
