CU Buffs Volleyball Swept by Cincinnati in Crushing Loss

UPDATE: The Colorado Buffaloes volleyball team suffered a devastating defeat against the Cincinnati Bearcats, falling 3-0 in their final regular season road match on Friday night. This marks a significant setback as the 21st-ranked Buffs struggled to maintain their momentum, posting set scores of 15-25, 16-25, 16-25.

The loss is particularly alarming as it was only the third time this season the Buffs have been swept. With a 22-7 overall record and 12-5 in the Big 12, the Buffs were aiming to secure a strong finish but fell short against a formidable Bearcats squad.

CU’s performance was marked by a lackluster hitting percentage of just .105, starkly contrasting Cincinnati’s impressive .404 mark. Head coach Jesse Mahoney expressed his disappointment in a release: “A match where Cincinnati did everything right and we couldn’t get going. We just couldn’t slow them down for whatever reason, and we lost some discipline once we got down.”

The Buffaloes will now return home to face No. 25 BYU on November 29, 2023, at 6 p.m. on ESPN+. This match is critical as the Buffs look to regain their footing before entering postseason play.

In the match against Cincinnati, standout performances came from CU’s Jordan and Splawska, each contributing 8 kills, while Burilovic added 6 kills. On the other side, Nolan led the Bearcats with 19 kills and Glendinning followed with 13 kills. The disparity in assists was also notable, with CU’s Finley recording 19 against Spies31.

The Buffs must regroup quickly as the upcoming match against BYU is crucial for their confidence and standings. Fans and players alike will be eager to see if Colorado can bounce back and finish the regular season on a high note.
