North Carolina Allocates $3.75M for Hurricane Helene Recovery Efforts

UPDATE: North Carolina has just announced a significant funding boost of $3.75 million to support survivors of Hurricane Helene, as part of the WNC Thrive initiative. Governor Josh Stein confirmed this urgent measure to enhance recovery efforts for families impacted by the devastating storm across 22 counties.

The funding is aimed at providing free recreational programs and vital mental health support to help children and families cope with the trauma left by the hurricane. Governor Stein emphasized that these initiatives are not just about fun—they represent a crucial step toward healing. “This partnership is giving children and families a reprieve from the devastation Hurricane Helene left behind,” he stated.

In an important move to strengthen these efforts, Trillium Health Resources will allocate an additional $2 million specifically for weekend and summer respite events. These programs include activities at Henry’s House at Victory Junction, a camp founded by ex-NASCAR driver Kyle Petty that provides adaptive recreational opportunities for children facing complex medical challenges, all at no cost to families.

The funding follows a previous allocation of $1.75 million to Vaya Health, aimed at enhancing WNC Thrive camps, which served over 1,000 young participants last summer. These camps focus on healing and community engagement, helping youths build resilience in the aftermath of the storm.

NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai echoed the importance of this funding, stating that the department is dedicated to ensuring long-term care and resource accessibility for those most affected. The initiatives are designed to provide not only recreational opportunities but also vital mental healthcare support.

As part of this expansive recovery effort, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) is also implementing crisis support through MORES teams, which offer immediate help to young people. New co-responder units are being formed to pair law enforcement with mental health professionals during emergencies.

For those struggling with the aftereffects of Hurricane Helene or facing other mental health challenges, resources are readily available. The Hope4NC helpline offers 24/7 support at 1-855-587-3463. Additionally, individuals can access personalized assistance by reaching out through the North Carolina Crisis Services Website or connecting with Spanish-speaking counselors by calling or texting 988 and pressing option 2. The NCDHHS Peer Warmline at 1-855-PEERS NC connects individuals with peers who understand the complexities of recovery.

These critical initiatives underscore North Carolina’s commitment to rebuilding communities and supporting families in their journey toward recovery. As the state mobilizes resources, it remains a beacon of hope for those affected by Hurricane Helene, providing both immediate aid and long-term support.
