Sharon Simpson, Beloved Matriarch, Passes Away at 92

URGENT UPDATE: Sharon Simpson, a cherished matriarch and community figure, passed away peacefully at home on October 31, 2025, at the age of 92. Her family confirmed that she died of natural causes, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience.

Born on April 24, 1933, in Fresno, CA, Sharon faced early tragedy with the loss of her brother, Story Washer, who died in a car accident at the age of 16. Despite these challenges, she moved to Santa Cruz, CA, in 1953, where she began building a life filled with love and family.

Sharon’s life changed forever when she met her husband, Jim Simpson, at the Edgewater Bar in Capitola. Their love story is marked by unforgettable moments, including a dramatic reunion after being separated by floodwaters in 1955. Their bond grew stronger, culminating in marriage later that year. Together, they welcomed four children: KC, Christina, Tony, and Stephanie.

Throughout her career, Sharon was a dedicated teacher’s aide at Harbor High during the 1970s and later owned The Clothes Cottage, a popular consignment shop in Capitola. Her passion for fashion and community engagement brought joy to many. After retiring, Sharon and Jim traveled extensively, sharing adventures until Jim’s passing from Alzheimer’s in 2011.

One of Sharon’s last wishes echoed her enduring love for Jim. She requested her family to call him, yearning for his presence as she approached the end. Sharon is survived by her children Mark (Ann), KC (Pete), Christina (Jim), Tony, and Stephanie (Alex), along with 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Jennifer Gonzalez for her compassionate care and to the dedicated staff at Hospice of Santa Cruz County, who enabled Sharon to remain in the comfort of her home during her final days.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, December 14, at 2:00 PM, at Sesnon House in Cabrillo College, Aptos. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or Hospice of Santa Cruz County.

As the community mourns the loss of Sharon Simpson, her spirit and warmth will continue to inspire all who knew her.
