Remembering Cary Lee Buss: A Celebration of Life in Algona

Cary Lee Buss, aged 50, passed away on November 4, 2025, at her home in Algona. Her family and friends will gather to celebrate her life on November 23 from 13:00 to 16:00 at the Water’s Edge Nature Center at Smith Lake in Algona. This event aims to honor Cary’s vibrant spirit and her remarkable sense of humor, while providing an opportunity for attendees to share memories and reflect on the joy she brought to their lives.

Cary was born on May 12, 1975, in Britt, to parents Charles Buss and Janice Strayer. She grew up in Garner and Algona, where she graduated from Algona High School. Pursuing her passion for beauty, Cary enrolled in La’James Cosmetology School in Mason City. Throughout her career, she worked in various roles, including cosmetologist, bartender, and daycare provider. Most recently, she served as a Para educator at Bryant Elementary School in Algona and worked as a cashier at Casey’s.

Beyond her professional life, Cary had a deep love for crafting and camping. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and family, always prioritizing connections with friends. Known for her generous heart, she was often the first to lend a helping hand or a listening ear to those in need.

Cary is survived by her children: Lacy Wait of Britt, Dakota Wait of Graettinger, and Dylon (Rachel) Wait of Algona. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Rozlynn, Ryatt, Braxston, Matthew, Kinsley, Braelynn, Oaklynn, Maliah, Clara, Gemma, and Serena. She is also remembered by her mother, Janice Hartman of Milford, and her siblings: Janet Strayer, Jeannie Buss, Doug Buss, and Lisa Nelson, all from Milford and Dakota City respectively.

The family acknowledges the loss of Cary’s father, Charles Buss, and stepfather, Merle Hartman, as well as her grandparents: John and Faye Strayer and Otty and Norma Buss. The family also mourns the passing of nephews Matthew Strayer and Alex Nelson, aunt Dort Sandal, and godfather Gary Sandal.
