BREAKING: The iconic CTA Holiday Train and holiday bus are set to return to Chicago, marking the start of festive celebrations for residents and visitors alike. The beloved traditions kick off with the holiday bus on November 25, 2023, followed by the holiday train on November 28, 2023, right after Thanksgiving.
The 34th year of the holiday train will commence from the Midway Orange Line station, featuring six beautifully decorated passenger cars, alongside an open flatcar carrying Santa Claus and his sleigh. Excitingly, select train runs will offer limited-time photo opportunities with Santa, a highlight for families looking to capture the holiday spirit.
This year’s holiday bus is particularly festive, showcasing the renowned Christkindlmarket with a delightful holiday theme. Riders can expect to see a reindeer flying over Downtown on the bus’s exterior, while the interior is adorned like a gingerbread house, complete with a special chair for Santa in the rear.
Both the holiday train and bus will operate until December 22, 2023, and December 20, 2023, respectively, bringing joy to commuters and holiday enthusiasts across the city. The CTA has introduced a real-time tracking system for the holiday train, identifiable by a candy cane icon on the CTA Train Tracker, allowing families to track Santa’s journey through the city.
In addition to the festive rides, the CTA continues its charitable efforts by delivering 400 food baskets to local community organizations, ensuring that the holiday spirit reaches those in need. “Over the years, this holiday tradition has evolved from its modest beginnings to a spectacular sight, whether during the day or at night,” the CTA stated in a news release.
