Urgent Closure of Virginia Capital Trail Starts Dec. 1 for Repairs

UPDATE: Starting December 1, 2025, a significant portion of the Virginia Capital Trail will be closed for urgent construction work. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a multiweek closure to replace the bridge deck and substructure between mile markers 3 and 4 along the Jamestown leg of the 52-mile trail.

The closure will affect the trail along John Tyler Highway (Route 5), from just east of Governor’s Landing Road to Heritage Landing Road. VDOT officials estimate that the work will take approximately two to three weeks, but warn that the timeline is weather-dependent and subject to change.

This bridge deck replacement is crucial for enhancing safety on the trail. Crews will be installing new composite decking boards designed with added texture to improve friction for both pedestrians and cyclists. This upgrade aims to reduce the risk of accidents and ensure a safer experience for users.

The Virginia Capital Trail serves as a vital connection for cyclists and pedestrians, linking Jamestown to downtown Richmond. The closure may impact local residents and visitors who rely on the trail for recreational activities.

As part of ongoing improvements, the planned Trail757 project aims to further connect the Capital Trail with Colonial Williamsburg, enhancing accessibility and promoting outdoor activities in the region.

Officials urge all users of the Virginia Capital Trail to plan alternative routes during the closure and stay informed about the latest updates from VDOT. This critical construction work is a step toward ensuring a safer and more enjoyable trail experience for everyone.
