Former President Donald Trump faced backlash from some of his supporters after he made disparaging remarks about Republican Representative Thomas Massie following news of Massie’s remarriage. Massie, who represents Kentucky, announced on November 3, 2024, that he had tied the knot with Carolyn Moffa last month, after the passing of his first wife, Rhonda Massie, in June 2024.
Trump took to Truth Social to comment on Massie’s new marriage, questioning the timing and suggesting it was a sign of weakness. He wrote, “Did Thomas Massie, sometimes referred to as Rand Paul Jr., because of the fact that he always votes against the Republican Party, get married already??? Boy, that was quick!” He further derided Massie’s electoral prospects, stating, “No wonder the Polls have him at less than an 8% chance of winning the Election.” Trump concluded his post with a mocking farewell to Massie and his new wife, implying she would soon realize she was “stuck with a LOSER.”
The remarks have drawn criticism from within Trump’s own political base. Jenna Ellis, a former attorney for Trump and a prominent figure among MAGA supporters, called the comments “political mud-slinging.” In a post on X, she expressed her disapproval, stating, “Some things are still sacred and should still be beyond this kind of political mud-slinging.” Ellis emphasized the emotional toll of losing a spouse, noting her long-standing friendship with Massie.
Critics of Trump’s comments include right-wing commentator Evan Kilgore, who labeled the remarks as “disgusting.” Kilgore remarked on his X account that it was inappropriate for Trump to attack Massie, particularly in light of the personal tragedy he has faced. “This is actually disgusting,” he wrote, stating, “Donald Trump has lost me.”
Another conservative commentator, Rebekah Worsham, added to the criticism, sarcastically remarking, “How presidential,” in response to Trump’s comments. The backlash continued from various accounts identifying themselves as “America First,” with users expressing disdain over Trump’s decision to involve Massie’s personal life in his political commentary. One user stated, “This is so low,” while another remarked, “This is very nasty by Trump,” highlighting the sentiment among some conservatives that personal matters should remain off-limits in political discourse.
Massie has been a vocal figure within the Republican Party, often challenging Trump’s decisions and aligning with Democrats on certain issues, such as advocating for the release of Jeffrey Epstein files. Tensions between Trump and Massie have persisted since 2020, when Trump attempted to remove Massie from the party.
The comments made by Trump reflect a continuing rift within the Republican Party, particularly among the faction aligned with MAGA ideals. As the 2024 election approaches, the dynamics between established party members and more extreme factions remain a focal point of interest.
The Independent has reached out to Massie’s office for further comments regarding the situation but has not yet received a response.
