Pochettino Applauds MLS Calendar Change for Global Alignment

The decision by Major League Soccer (MLS) to align its calendar with major global leagues has been met with enthusiasm from key figures in the sport, including U.S. men’s national team head coach Mauricio Pochettino. On Thursday, all MLS owners voted to approve this significant change, which will take effect starting with the 2027–28 season.

Pochettino described the move as a “great step forward,” emphasizing its potential benefits for players, coaches, and clubs. He stated, “For sure, this is a great step forward for MLS to be on par with the top leagues in the world.” The new alignment with the international calendar, according to Pochettino, will facilitate critical player development and enhance the quality of competition in U.S. soccer.

The Argentine manager highlighted that the change is not limited to senior national teams. It will also allow for better access to youth national team players during important international competitions, which he believes is essential for their growth. “This is going to have a huge positive impact,” he added, underlining the broader implications for soccer development in the country.

Pochettino’s Strong Support for MLS Changes

Speaking just before the USMNT’s friendly match against Paraguay, Pochettino reiterated his support for the calendar adjustment. “My reaction is: well done,” he stated. “Congratulations, fantastic, I think great decision. What we can do from my personal view and the [U.S. soccer] federation is to show our support. It’s a great decision.”

Pochettino noted that aligning the MLS schedule with global standards will create a competitive atmosphere similar to that in Europe, where he believes U.S. soccer can learn valuable lessons. “The feeling is going to be like we are competing here in the U.S. like we are in Europe, that is always the reference,” he explained. This evolution, he stated, is essential for the sport’s growth in the U.S.

Former U.S. men’s national team manager Gregg Berhalter and soccer icon Clint Dempsey also praised the MLS for this transformative move. Dempsey remarked, “Having MLS on the same timetable as the rest of the world is great.” He emphasized that this alignment benefits everyone involved in the sport, making it easier for players, coaches, and fans to engage throughout the year.

As MLS prepares for this significant shift, the anticipation builds for how it will reshape the landscape of American soccer. The decision marks a pivotal moment in the league’s history, positioning it for greater competitiveness on the international stage.
