UPDATE: Fargo has officially opened its largest public parking ramp, a stunning $20 million facility that promises to transform downtown access. The grand opening took place on Friday, November 14, 2023, at 602 NP Ave, marking a significant milestone for the city.
The new 480-stall garage is part of a larger $60 million redevelopment project that will include a six-story housing complex and the new home for the Fargo Moorhead Community Theater. Mayor Tim Mahoney expressed excitement, stating, “With so many people coming downtown, they need a place to park.”
This seven-floor parking garage boasts a unique 360-degree view of downtown Fargo from its top level, setting it apart from other facilities. The ramp features advanced security measures, including automated garage doors that close behind vehicles, and a QR code system for secure entry, enhancing safety for motorists.
Jim Gilmour, Fargo’s director of strategic planning and research, emphasized the importance of security, saying, “We’ve had a lot of people loitering in stairwells in some of our other facilities, and vandalism. This makes it more secure for people parking their cars here.”
Construction began in 2024, transforming what was once a surface lot into a vital multi-use space. Crews are on track to complete the complex by next year, which will include 168 apartment units, 2,440 square feet of commercial space, and a 400-seat theater with classrooms. This ambitious project will not only provide essential parking but also stimulate the local economy, making downtown Fargo more accessible and vibrant.
The city financed the parking ramp through a combination of $9 million in bonds and a $9 million loan from the Bank of North Dakota. An additional $2 million will come from parking revenue, with property taxes from the project aiding in loan repayment.
The NP parking garage is now the fifth public ramp in downtown Fargo, joining the Roberts Commons Garage, Civic Center Ramp, Mercantile Garage, and MATBUS Ground Transportation Center. Notably, parking remains free after 5 p.m. daily and on weekends, making it convenient for residents and visitors alike.
Residents of the new 168-unit apartment complex will have guaranteed parking, further integrating the living space with community activities. According to Rocky Schneider, executive director for the Downtown Community Partnership, these developments are crucial. “Parking ramps help businesses and cultural events provide their services. It also lets visitors explore downtown.”
As this project unfolds, its impact on the community is already being felt. Mayor Mahoney remarked, “Its full potential is being realized. It’s being transformed into a multi-use that is great for our community.”
The grand opening of the NP parking ramp is more than just a new facility; it signifies a major step towards the revitalization of downtown Fargo, providing essential services and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of this transformative project that promises to reshape the urban landscape of Fargo for years to come.
