UPDATE: New York health officials are urgently advising residents to prepare for the flu season as they anticipate a moderate outbreak this year. Jim McDonald, M.D., M.P.H., the commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, has confirmed that flu season typically ramps up in October, coinciding with rising cases of RSV and lingering COVID-19 infections.
The CDC predicts a moderate flu season, but McDonald warns that flu seasons can be unpredictable. “If you’ve seen one flu season, you’ve seen only one flu season,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of vaccination. He stressed, “The best way to protect yourself is to get the flu vaccine and wash your hands regularly.”
Residents are reminded to be vigilant about their health. McDonald advises postponing social interactions if you or your child are feeling unwell. “Those are some commonsense things we can do to stay healthy,” he noted.
In addition to the flu vaccine, McDonald highlighted the significance of the RSV vaccine, particularly for infants. “This is critical because RSV is one of the leading causes of infants being admitted to the hospital,” he explained. The introduction of an RSV vaccine is anticipated to be a groundbreaking public health tool this season.
McDonald also cautioned against misinformation online, urging residents to rely on qualified medical professionals for health decisions. “Too many of us are listening to perfect strangers who really aren’t qualified,” he said. “That’s just not in our own best interest.”
He recommended a healthy diet and hydration as essential components of maintaining well-being during the flu season. “Drink as many fluids as you can keep down, try to eat those fruits and vegetables, and take Tylenol for that fever,” he advised.
As flu, COVID-19, and RSV share similar symptoms—such as cough, fever, and runny nose—McDonald reminded the public to listen to their bodies and seek medical attention if necessary. “If your body is speaking, we should always listen,” he urged.
