Kamaru Usman is mapping out a strategic plan for the conclusion of his illustrious UFC career, with aspirations to retire as a two-division champion. In an exclusive interview with TMZ Sports, the former welterweight champion shared his vision, which hinges on the outcome of the main event at UFC 322, taking place on March 30, 2024, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Usman, who is now 38 years old, is particularly focused on the title fight between current welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena and Islam Makhachev, the former lightweight champion. Makhachev moved up a division to challenge for the title, creating an intriguing scenario for Usman, who last fought in June 2023, securing a unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Buckley.
“I think [the fight is] a toss-up, but I do think Islam has the grappling edge when it goes down to the ground,” Usman remarked. “I think he’s just done it longer. We’ll see what happens. But of course, I’m looking to get in there and potentially test myself against the winner.”
Usman’s Ambitions in the Octagon
While Usman has not set a specific timeline for his return to the Octagon, he is eager to reclaim the welterweight title and pursue the middleweight championship, currently held by Khamzat Chimaev. This ambition is particularly significant for Usman, who held the welterweight title for an impressive three and a half years.
“The storybook would be to go and grab this title, then go and grab the other title,” Usman stated, illustrating his desire to be recognized as a two-division champion. He views the potential matchup against Chimaev as a compelling prospect, especially after their closely contested fight, which resulted in one of Usman’s four career losses.
“I think that’s an intriguing fight,” Usman added. “That’s a compelling fight that everybody would want to see on a full training camp to go out and challenge him.”
The Legacy of a Champion
Usman’s determination to secure his place in UFC history is clear. He aims to add the title of two-division champion to his already impressive resume, which is notably missing that accolade.
“Go out and get that. And at that point, then you look back and go, ‘Oh, what else is there to do?'” Usman concluded, encapsulating his ambition to cement his legacy in the sport.
As UFC 322 approaches, the MMA world will be watching closely, not only for the outcomes of these pivotal fights but also for the next chapter in Usman’s storied career. With his sights set on championship gold in two divisions, the journey ahead promises to be as thrilling as the fights themselves.
