NAHANT, MA — Community members gathered just hours ago at the Life Saving Station for an urgent memorial ceremony honoring veterans, hosted by the Nahant American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion.
Commander Dennis Treece welcomed the crowd, emphasizing the significance of the occasion. “Today, we come together to honor the courageous men and women who served in the United States military forces,” he stated.
Treece highlighted the historical importance of the date, noting that at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918, World War I combat ceased, marking a pivotal moment known as “the war to end all wars.” He urged attendees to remember not just the past, but the ongoing sacrifices made by veterans. “As long as the world remains a dangerous place, our military stands ready to answer the call,” he added.
Following Treece, Vice Commander Bob Fields spoke passionately about the essence of military service. “If there be glory in military service, it is the incredible spirit it engenders,” Fields proclaimed, underscoring the deep bonds formed among service members. He emphasized that the honor lies not in war itself but in the tenacity and dedication of those who serve.
Veterans Service Officer Dana Sheehan expressed gratitude for the strong community support veterans receive. He reflected on the broader implications of courage, stating, “Bravery is not only shown in battle but can transform our society.” Sheehan called for continued efforts to create positive change in the community.
Carl Jenkins, Sons of the American Legion Squadron Commander, reminded attendees of the importance of expressing gratitude to veterans. “Saying ‘thank you for your service’ helps heal wounds from times when warriors were blamed for the conflicts they faced,” Jenkins said, acknowledging the sacrifices made by veterans throughout history.
Local Representative Sean Reid praised Nahant for its supportive community, remarking on the beautiful day dedicated to appreciating the sacrifices of veterans and their families. “Nahant has one of the most loving communities when it comes to supporting all who have served,” he affirmed.
This heartfelt ceremony underscores the community’s commitment to honoring the bravery and dedication of veterans, ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten. As communities across the nation prepare for Veterans Day on November 11, 2023, the sentiments shared in Nahant resonate deeply, reminding us all of the profound impact veterans have on our freedom and safety.
As the day progresses, citizens are encouraged to participate in local events and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who serve.
