Major Snowstorm Set to Hit Mammoth Mountain Ahead of Opening Day

UPDATE: Just as the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area gears up for its 2025/2026 season opener on Friday, November 14, a significant snowstorm is set to blanket the region, promising an exciting start to the winter sports season. A powerful Pacific low-pressure system is forecasted to bring 1 to 2 feet of snow to elevations above 9,000 feet, with the storm expected to hit late this week.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service report that a well-organized Sierra storm is on its way, with conditions beginning to shift on Wednesday, November 12. Strong winds are anticipated to sweep through the area on Thursday, November 13, setting the stage for the snow to start accumulating that evening. According to meteorologist Chris Johnston, there is a 90% chance that the upper mountain will receive at least 1 foot of snow, creating a promising foundation for the resort’s opening day.

Mammoth Mountain, nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and attracting over 1.3 million skiers and snowboarders annually, has already received 16 inches of snow this October, a significant improvement over last year’s meager start of just 3 inches. Last season, the mountain recorded 286 inches of snowfall, with February alone contributing 74 inches.

As excitement builds, Joani Lynch, vice president of marketing and sales for Mammoth Mountain, expressed hope for the forecast to materialize. “If we can’t make it Friday, we will aim for the first day there is enough snow on the ground,” she stated, highlighting the critical need for a base of 12 to 18 inches once compacted. The resort is poised to open all available chairlifts and runs from the Main Lodge, with plans to expand operations quickly as conditions improve.

In addition to Mammoth, the storm is expected to impact Southern California, where rain will dominate lower elevations. The San Bernardino Mountains are forecasted to receive their first snow accumulations of at least a couple of inches, while the San Gabriel Mountains may see light snow showers on Thursday and Friday, with minimal accumulation expected in areas like Mount Baldy.

With winter sports enthusiasts eagerly awaiting the season, this snowstorm could significantly enhance conditions at Mammoth Mountain, making it an exciting time for both the resort and its visitors. Stay tuned for further updates as the storm approaches and preparations for the season opener continue.
