Aptos’ Kiana Safari Dominates SCCAL Finals to Defend Title

UPDATE: Aptos sophomore Kiana Safari has triumphed in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League (SCCAL) singles championship, defeating Aila Papadopoulos of Scotts Valley High with a commanding score of 6-2, 6-0. The match took place at Imperial Courts on Thursday, marking a critical moment in Safari’s quest for a second consecutive championship.

This victory is particularly significant as it secures Safari a spot in the upcoming Central Coast Section (CCS) Singles Tournament, scheduled for November 17-19 at Bay Club Courtside in Los Gatos. “It was pretty fun,” Safari remarked, acknowledging the intense competition from Papadopoulos. “We both played really well.”

Safari, who entered the finals as the top seed after winning her previous matches with double bagels, showcased her extensive training over the summer at No Quit Tennis Academy in Las Vegas. This preparation was crucial in outmaneuvering Papadopoulos, who aimed to keep the match dynamic and wear Safari down.

Papadopoulos, a senior, displayed remarkable resilience, balancing her tennis commitments with her role on the girls’ volleyball team, where she was also competing in the CCS semifinals. “It’s been super hard,” she shared, reflecting on her challenging schedule, including recovering from a fractured elbow earlier this season.

The doubles final saw another thrilling outcome as Francesca Garces and Julia Kennedy from Santa Cruz High defeated Aptos twins Isabella and Natalia Calderon with a score of 6-1, 6-3. This win extends their season as they also prepare for the CCS Doubles Tournament, set for the same weekend as the singles tournament.

Looking ahead, Safari is determined to improve on her previous CCS performance, where she faced a tough draw and suffered a first-round loss. “Redemption,” she declared, expressing her ambition to advance further this year. As for Papadopoulos, she continues to juggle her athletic commitments and academic aspirations, with hopes of attending a UC school.

With both players demonstrating exceptional talent and dedication, the SCCAL championships highlight the fierce competition in high school tennis. As they prepare for their next challenges, the spotlight will undoubtedly remain on these emerging athletes.

Stay tuned for more updates as the CCS tournaments approach, and watch for Safari’s journey as she aims for success on a broader stage.
