According to a news release from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, the victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, reported the attack after the fox unexpectedly emerged from under her vehicle. She received medical treatment and was subsequently released from a local hospital.

The fox was euthanized shortly after the attack and sent to the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health, where it tested positive for rabies. This alarming incident has prompted Chatham County Sheriff Mike Roberson to urge residents to remain vigilant about wildlife encounters.

“Encounters like this are rare,” Sheriff Roberson stated, “but they remind us why rabies prevention is so important. Taking those steps helps protect both people and animals.”

In response to this incident, the Chatham County Public Health Department has issued additional guidelines for residents on safeguarding themselves and their pets against rabies. Public Health Director Mike Zelek emphasized the potential severity of rabies, stating, “Rabies is a deadly disease if medical treatment does not start before the first symptoms appear. If you think you may have been exposed, seek medical care right away at the emergency department.”

Health officials have highlighted the importance of recognizing flu-like symptoms that may escalate into confusion, hallucinations, or severe neurological effects. They have also noted that multiple wild animals in Chatham County have tested positive for rabies in recent years, heightening the urgency of preventive measures.
