Gerry Turner Reflects on Wedding to Theresa Nist as ‘Funeral’

Former reality star Gerry Turner, known for his role in the Golden Bachelor, has shared unsettling reflections about his wedding to Theresa Nist. In an episode of the Tamron Hall Show aired on November 3, 2024, Turner described his feelings on the eve of the ceremony, stating it felt more like “butterflies and an anticipated funeral rather than a wedding.”

Turner, aged 74, recounted the emotional turmoil he experienced before tying the knot with Nist, 72. He admitted to grappling with mixed feelings as he transitioned from the high-pressure environment of reality television to the intimate setting of his wedding. “There were a lot of mixed feelings,” he explained. Despite his apprehensions, Turner proceeded with the marriage, which ultimately ended in divorce just months later.

In his memoir, Golden Years: What I’ve Learned from Love, Loss, and Reality TV, released on November 4, 2024, Turner elaborates on his relationship with Nist. He acknowledged that thoughts of her frequently surfaced as he revisited their shared experiences in the book. “I mean, early in the book and for most of the book, I’m very complimentary of Theresa,” he stated. However, he noted that their differing views on her work commitments contributed to their relationship’s breakdown.

During the interview, Hall challenged Turner’s self-assessment of being complimentary, suggesting that his portrayal of Nist as a victim did not constitute a genuine compliment. “I don’t think that’s a compliment,” Hall remarked, to which Turner responded, “It’s my truth. It’s what I believe.” The exchange highlighted the complexities of their relationship and the challenges of communicating effectively during tumultuous times.

Nist did not hesitate to respond to Turner’s comments. On the following day, she appeared on the Dear Shandy podcast, expressing regret over their rushed marriage. “I regret getting married so quickly. That shouldn’t have happened,” she said. Nist emphasized that she would have appreciated an open conversation about Turner’s feelings before the wedding, indicating she would have felt “relieved” had he chosen to voice his concerns.

She further conveyed her disappointment, stating, “You should have called off the wedding,” in reference to Turner’s decision to move forward with the nuptials despite his reservations.

As Turner looks to the future, he has publicly moved on and is currently engaged to Lana Sutton, a development he announced in October. Meanwhile, Nist remains optimistic about finding love again, stating, “I really do want to get married. I do want love in my life. That’s what I wanted.”

This unfolding narrative between Turner and Nist reveals the intricacies of relationships formed in the spotlight, showcasing the challenges of navigating personal feelings amid public scrutiny. As both individuals seek new beginnings, their experiences serve as a reminder of the complexities of love and commitment.
