Humane Society Launches New ‘Catio’ to Boost Cat Adoptions

URGENT UPDATE: The Humane Society of the North Bay (HSNB) has just unveiled a brand-new outdoor “catio” designed to enhance the adoption experience for shelter cats. Located in Vallejo, California, this innovative space allows adoptable felines to bask in the sun and enjoy fresh air while remaining safe from harm.

The Ila Emerson Memorial Catio features wrap-around enclosed hard netting, providing a secure environment for the shelter’s cats to explore. With multi-level platforms, the kitties can perch or nap at various heights, creating a stimulating atmosphere. Thanks to generous donations, the catio is equipped with cat trees, sensory toys, and cozy bedding, all crafted to enrich the cats’ lives.

“Having the space to come out and roam benefits everybody,” said Kristina George, a staff member at HSNB. She emphasized that this new environment will help the cats socialize, leading to higher adoption rates. The catio also provides a unique opportunity for potential adopters to interact with the cats in a comfortable, open setting.

This project took approximately seven weeks to complete, including the installation of a new deck and contributions from local businesses like Foster Lumber and Golden State Lumber. Designed by Marin-based catio specialist Roger Sierra and his son, Brooke, the space marks a significant improvement from the previous indoor-only setup.

Before the catio, the shelter was limited to housing around 60 cats in two small rooms. HSNB Director Carol Stillson noted, “Cats kind of shut down” in such confined spaces. Now, with access to cozy nooks and shaded perches, the cats can enjoy what the shelter calls “a taste of nature,” which is crucial for their mental well-being.

In addition to the catio launch, HSNB has announced an annual adoption special starting November 1, 2023. The shelter is offering reduced rates on black or tuxedo cats, which are often overlooked due to negative stereotypes. Starting in November, adopters can benefit from $50 off kitten adoption fees and $25 off for cats aged six months and older. There is also a discount of $50 when adopting a pair of cats.

Joseph Hayden, HSNB Board President, explained the shelter’s commitment to animal welfare. “We do our homework,” he said, ensuring potential owners undergo thorough vetting. “We are strict… because we want to make sure it’s in the best interest of the animal.”

The introduction of the catio and the upcoming adoption special signifies a new chapter for HSNB, aiming to boost adoption rates and enhance the lives of shelter cats. For more information on adoptions or how to schedule a visit, check out the Humane Society of the North Bay’s official website.

This new initiative not only promises to improve the quality of life for the shelter’s cats but also encourages the community to engage in the joy of animal adoption. Don’t miss out on the chance to meet these furry friends in their new outdoor paradise!
