Depew’s Mason McGloin Shines as Three-Sport Star and Leader

Mason McGloin, a standout athlete at Depew High School in New York, has made a name for himself as a versatile three-sport competitor. His impressive stature of 6 feet 5 inches and 280 pounds lends itself particularly well to the gridiron, where he shines as a football player. “There’s nothing like football,” McGloin stated. “There’s nothing like coming out for 48 minutes and hitting people. You can’t do that anywhere else. It’s the best.”

When the pressure mounts during critical moments of a game, McGloin wants to be the player his coaches rely on. “I tell coach all the time, run the ball behind me, and I like what we’re going to do,” he noted. This confidence extends to his role as a basketball player, where he often takes the lead in decision-making. “My coach will ask me, ‘What play do you want?’ I’ll tell him to give me the ball; I’ll make something happen,” he added.

Leadership on and off the Field

Depew’s head football coach, Joe Pagano, has praised McGloin’s dedication and work ethic. “He’s obviously our starting tackle,” Pagano remarked. “He works in the offseason as if he’s fighting for a roster spot.” This preparation reflects McGloin’s commitment, not just as an athlete but also as a leader within his community.

The senior is actively involved in various community initiatives, recognizing the support he has received throughout his upbringing. “Growing up in Depew, the community has always had my back,” McGloin shared. “If you look up into the stands during games, I could tell you everyone in the stands. I love it. Always feel that giving back to the community is the most important part of being an athlete.”

Academic Excellence

Balancing athletics with academics, McGloin maintains an impressive 4.0 GPA. He believes that success in the classroom translates to the field. “I believe that whatever you do, you have to do it 100%,” he explained. “It starts in the classroom. You wake up at 7:30 in the morning to go to class. You get to class. You put the work in, and then it’ll translate to the football field.”

As McGloin prepares for the next chapter of his life, he is considering a focus on either computer science or cyber security in college. His combination of athletic prowess, academic achievement, and community involvement positions him as a well-rounded individual ready to take on future challenges.
