UPDATE: New leadership is on the horizon for the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce as Dave Kirk has been named the new president, effective December 8, 2023. Kirk, a committed community advocate, will succeed Candance Castlen Brake, who has led the Chamber since March 2015.
This appointment is significant for Owensboro, as Kirk, 38, has a proven track record in promoting the region. He has served as the destination management director for the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau since 2018, where he has been instrumental in elevating the city’s tourism profile.
Kirk expressed his feelings about this transition, stating, “Leaving is bittersweet.” He is stepping into a role that many believe will shape the future of economic development in Owensboro. Mark Calitri, CVB president, praised Kirk’s dedication, saying, “I’ve watched him pour his heart out into this community… With Dave’s leadership, Visit Owensboro has become a powerhouse.”
Kirk’s unanimous selection comes after an extensive national search that attracted 70 applications. Olga McKissic, board chairwoman, highlighted Kirk’s unique qualifications: “We realized that he stood out above all the rest,” she said, referencing his previous volunteer work with the Chamber and his deep understanding of its culture.
As Kirk prepares to take office, he has already set his sights on expanding the Chamber’s membership, which currently stands at 988 members—the highest in over a decade. “If we haven’t hit 1,000 before I arrive, that will be my first goal,” he declared.
Kirk’s background is deeply rooted in Owensboro. A graduate of Owensboro High School, he holds degrees in journalism and communications from the University of Kentucky. He began his career as a television reporter before transitioning to public service as the public information officer for Owensboro Public Schools in 2012. His community involvement includes moderating forums and coordinating events, showcasing his commitment to local issues.
Kirk’s wife, Jessica, also has strong ties to the Chamber, having served as executive director of Leadership Owensboro. Together, they are raising three sons in the community they cherish.
Looking ahead, Kirk aims to engage both members and nonmembers, stating, “I want to listen to members and nonmembers. I want to know why nonmembers aren’t members.” His vision includes ensuring that Owensboro’s voice resonates in Frankfort, emphasizing the collaborative potential of the Chamber, CVB, and Greater Owensboro Economic Development Corp.
As the community anticipates Kirk’s leadership, the focus remains on the growth and prosperity of Owensboro. His appointment is not just a transition; it represents a renewed commitment to fostering economic and social development in the region.
With Kirk at the helm, the future looks promising. Stay tuned for more developments as he embarks on this critical new chapter for the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce. This is a moment that many in the community are eager to witness unfold.
