The McCann Tech golf team achieved a commendable seventh-place finish at the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division III State Golf Championship held on September 25, 2023, at Blissful Meadows Golf Club in Uxbridge. This tournament followed their impressive third-place finish at the Western Massachusetts tournament, which had secured their spot at the state level.
Competing against a field of 12 teams, McCann Tech was the top finisher from the Western Massachusetts region, completing the round with a score of 60-over 348. The team narrowly missed sixth place, finishing just one stroke behind Tewksbury. The tournament was won by Old Rochester, which finished with a score of 35-over 323.
Among the McCann Tech players, Gabe Thomas led the team with a score of 13-over 85, placing him 26th overall. His performance included an impressive ten pars throughout the day, with a notable streak of six consecutive pars from the sixth to the 11th hole. Following Thomas, Nolan Booth finished with a score of 14-over 86, while Landon Leclair and Kale Kondel scored 15-over 87 and 18-over 90, respectively.
Team Highlights and Individual Performances
The tournament featured a mix of challenging holes that tested the players’ skills. Kale Kondel made two birdies, including on the 325-yard par-4 first hole and the 373-yard par-4 17th hole. Meanwhile, Landon Leclair secured a birdie on the 312-yard par-4 seventh hole. Booth’s performance was marked by a series of five consecutive pars, demonstrating his consistency despite facing two double-bogeys.
In addition to the primary scoring quartet, Mason Rondeau and Nick Varellas also represented McCann Tech at the championship, contributing to the team’s overall experience at the event.
The individual state champion was Aidan Connell from Seekonk, who finished with a score of 2-over 74. The Western Massachusetts champion, Ryley Regan of Hopkins Academy, ended the tournament tied for 17th place with a score of 12-over 84, while Monty Tech, another Western Mass. competitor, finished ninth with a score of 357.
The McCann Tech golf team’s journey to the state championship is a testament to their hard work and dedication throughout the season. Their performance at the MIAA tournament not only highlights their skills but also sets a strong foundation for future competitions.
