Texas Tech’s backup quarterback, Will Hammond, is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee. The injury occurred during the No. 13 Red Raiders’ dominant 42-0 victory over Oklahoma State. This incident marks a significant setback for Hammond, who was starting in place of Behren Morton, the team’s primary quarterback.
Hammond’s injury happened during just his second start, as he filled in for Morton, who is anticipated to return when Texas Tech (7-1, 4-1 Big 12) faces Kansas State on October 21. Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire expressed optimism regarding Hammond’s recovery, stating that he expects Hammond to be ready for the next season, despite the likelihood that he will miss spring practice.
“If it’s going to be somebody that’s going to be totally dedicated to getting back and attack the situation, there’s nobody that attacks anything like Will Hammond,” McGuire said. “Feel real confident that he’ll have himself ready to go.”
In light of Hammond’s injury, Mitch Griffis has been elevated to the backup quarterback position. Griffis had a year away from football but previously played nine games for Wake Forest in 2023. Following Hammond’s exit from the Oklahoma State game, Griffis made an impact by throwing for a touchdown and running for another score.
Morton, the regular starter, has been dealing with injuries throughout the season, including a knee injury sustained during a 67-7 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the season opener. He later re-aggravated this injury during a 41-17 win against Kansas on October 11. Additionally, Morton was forced to leave the game against Utah after suffering a hit to the helmet, further complicating the team’s quarterback situation.
As the Red Raiders prepare for their upcoming matchup against Kansas State, they will look to capitalize on their current momentum while navigating the challenges posed by their quarterback injuries.
