URGENT UPDATE: Stanford’s starting quarterback situation remains uncertain as they prepare for a crucial game against No. 9 Miami this Saturday at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN. Redshirt freshman Elijah Brown is poised to make his first start following an injury to Ben Gulbranson, who was injured in the Cardinal’s recent 20-13 victory over Florida State.
Gulbranson, who has been the team’s starter, sustained a knee injury after being sacked in the second quarter. His absence could leave Stanford as a 30.5-point underdog against a formidable Miami defense, which currently ranks as the best in the ACC, allowing just 15.3 points per game.
Brown stepped in during the game against Florida State, completing 6 of 12 passes for 71 yards and leading a critical 94-yard touchdown drive in the third quarter. Despite the dramatic win, Stanford struggled offensively in the fourth quarter, gaining only 25 yards over four possessions.
“I think just keeping a level head and just staying the course is the key to that win,” Brown said.
The question of whether Brown will officially start on Saturday remains pending, with interim coach Frank Reich providing no updates on Gulbranson’s condition during Monday’s press conference. “You know, if I have something, I’m not afraid to give it to you guys. But as of right now, I’m really not prepared with anything,” Reich stated.
Brown, a two-time state champion from Mater Dei, previously started one game last season, where he struggled against SMU, completing 16 of 32 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. “Obviously, last year when I got in, it didn’t really go our way,” Brown reflected. “But you just have to keep moving forward, keep playing the next play, and stay the course.”
In preparation for this high-stakes matchup, the Cardinal must strategize to overcome Miami’s tough defense. The Hurricanes are coming off a loss to Louisville, but they have already secured victories against top teams like Notre Dame and Florida, showcasing their strength this season.
As fans await the official announcement regarding the starting QB, the outcome of this game could significantly impact Stanford’s season and Brown’s future as the team’s leader. Keep an eye on updates as kickoff approaches!
