BREAKING: Johnson City Public Works has just been awarded the 2025 Mark Miller Project of the Year for their transformative work on the West Walnut Street Corridor Redevelopment Plan. This prestigious recognition was announced during the Tennessee Chapter of American Public Works Association annual conference on September 24, highlighting the city’s commitment to infrastructure improvement and community safety.
The $41 million project has completely revitalized a critical section of Johnson City, enhancing the area’s navigability and aesthetic appeal. City Engineer Wallace McCulloch praised the Public Works team for their unwavering dedication to safety protocols throughout construction, which allowed daily life in the community to continue seamlessly.
“Despite challenges associated with aging infrastructure and historical complexities, crews prevailed in delivering on a project that adds to the community’s quality of life,”
McCulloch stated, emphasizing the project’s significance.
The West Walnut Corridor now features pedestrian-friendly streets, upgraded water and sewer systems, and improved storm drains and utilities. It also includes vital traffic-calming elements designed to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The addition of raised intersections and dedicated bike lanes underscores the city’s commitment to fostering a safe, connected community.
City Manager Cathy Ball expressed pride in the Public Works team’s efforts, stating,
“Through its dedication, teamwork, and engagement, the employees of Public Works and other City departments exemplified the values of our organization and the standards that this award honors.”
