Delaware County has unveiled a custom-designed bell sculpture to commemorate the United States’ upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026. The initiative, part of the Bells Across PA public arts project, was launched by America250PA on Monday. The bell, crafted from fiberglass and painted by local artist Joshua Ruggeri, is currently on display at the ShopRite of Drexeline, thanks to sponsorship from Wakefern Food Corp. and Burns Family Neighborhood Markets.

According to Pat Burns, chair of America250PA and CEO of ShopRite, the initiative aims to tell the story of Pennsylvania and celebrate the pride of its communities. “To me, America250 celebrates legacy,” Burns stated. “The future is what it’s all about in our great country and great state.”

Ruggeri expressed that the bell represents more than just a decorative piece, referring to it as “the ultimate canvas of freedom.” He included imagery of the soaring eagle, the Stars and Stripes, and symbols of independence such as Independence Hall and the Statue of Liberty. “Liberty, like a Delco accent, is not going anywhere,” he quipped, emphasizing the importance of regional identity.

The Bells Across PA initiative plans to install 108 commemorative bells across all 67 counties in Pennsylvania by 2026, reflecting the state’s significant contributions to the American narrative. Monday’s unveiling attracted local elected officials, including Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon, Pennsylvania House Speaker Joanna McClinton, State Senator Tim Kearney, and State Representative Heather Boyd.

During the ceremony, Vice Chair of Delaware County Richard Womack remarked that the bell serves as a witness to the United States’ history. He highlighted a historic bell located in Chester’s 1724 courthouse, which was rung on July 8, 1776, to summon residents for the reading of the Declaration of Independence. A second ringing of this bell is planned for July 8, 2026, to honor the nation’s heritage.

Scanlon emphasized the significance of remembering and celebrating the nation’s past, particularly during challenging times. “Our commitment to democracy and self-government and the beautiful diversity of this country,” she noted, underlining the importance of unity amid current political tensions.

Kearney added that the placement of bells throughout the counties serves as a reminder of the connections among communities, illustrating shared history as the nation prepares for its milestone anniversary. Boyd praised the initiative for providing residents with opportunities to engage with public art, asserting that “every person in our community has the opportunity to see this.”

The event, while festive, occurred against a backdrop of pressing political issues, including an impending federal government shutdown and an overdue state budget. Kearney highlighted the unusual situation in which Pennsylvania is experiencing a budget impasse despite a general fund surplus of approximately $3 billion.

Scanlon criticized the current federal budget discussions, specifically pointing to the lack of negotiation in Congress, which has left many issues unresolved. “It’s a little lonely (in Washington) because only the Democrats are there,” she said, calling for bipartisan collaboration.

As the nation approaches its 250th birthday, Delaware County’s commemorative bell stands as a symbol of pride and resilience, capturing the spirit of a community that is deeply connected to its history and eager to celebrate its future.
