Cargo Plane Crashes into Sea at Hong Kong Airport, 2 Dead

UPDATE: A tragic incident at Hong Kong International Airport has resulted in the deaths of two security officers after a cargo plane skidded off the runway and crashed into the sea early this morning. The shocking event occurred at approximately 3:50 a.m. local time on October 20, 2023.
The cargo plane, a Boeing 747, was landing when it veered off the North Runway, colliding with an airport security patrol car. The impact propelled the vehicle into the water, tragically resulting in the deaths of both officers onboard. One officer was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital.
During a press conference, Steven Yiu Siu-Chung, executive director for airport operations, confirmed the details of the incident, stating that the plane “deviated from the North Runway after landing and ditched into the sea.” He emphasized that the patrol vehicle was “outside the fences” and on a designated patrol route at the time of the collision.
The two security personnel had dedicated seven and twelve years of service to the airport, highlighting the profound impact of this tragedy on the community. In total, 213 firefighters and emergency responders were deployed, utilizing 45 vehicles and ships to manage the situation.
While the North Runway remains closed for investigation, operations on the South and Center Runways continue as normal. Officials have assured that the over 1,000 flights scheduled throughout the day will not be affected.
Images from the scene reveal the cargo plane shattered, with the tail section detached from the fuselage. The flight had originated from Al Maktoum International Airport prior to the incident.
Emirates, the airline operating the cargo flight, confirmed that all four crew members onboard were rescued and are reported safe. The company noted there was no cargo on board at the time of the accident.
The Hong Kong Civil Aviation Department has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident. As the investigation unfolds, the airport authority is expected to provide updates on the reopening of the North Runway and any further developments.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks faced by airport personnel and the urgent need for safety protocols. The impact on the families of the deceased officers is immeasurable, and the airport community is mourning this profound loss.
