Missouri Lt. Gov. David Wasinger Celebrates Dairy Bar Revival

Missouri’s Lieutenant Governor, David Wasinger, visited The Dairy Bar in Fredericktown on March 15, 2024, as part of his journey to Cape Girardeau. The visit coincided with his participation in an elder abuse forum, providing an opportunity to highlight local businesses and community support.

The Dairy Bar, a beloved establishment that reopened in 2023, is owned by Jim and Mary Spiker. During the visit, the Spikers showcased their newly renovated space, including an expanded drive-thru and a shaded outdoor area for customers. Wasinger enjoyed the local specialty, a signature smash burger alongside colorful, dairy-free Dole whip ice cream.

Local Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tessa Rhekop praised the significance of such establishments in small towns. She emphasized that local businesses contribute not just to the economy but also to community identity. “Just having people be able to walk around and visit a place like this… it’s just so important,” Rhekop stated. She reflected on the community’s concern when the previous iteration of The Dairy Bar closed, noting the relief and joy when the Spikers took over.

Wasinger shared personal anecdotes from his youth, recalling his time working at a local fast-food chain and expressing his fondness for small towns like his hometown of Hannibal. He acknowledged the importance of community support in initiatives like Buy Missouri, which encourages residents to purchase local products. “We’re trying to get the most out of the counties,” Wasinger remarked. “And it doesn’t get more Missouri than this.”

The conversation also touched on serious topics such as elder abuse, with local alderman Rick Polete discussing challenges in identifying and proving such cases. He shared insights from his banking experience, highlighting the complexities involved when family members attempt to influence financial decisions of older adults.

Community members expressed their appreciation for the local government’s accessibility and involvement. One citizen reminisced about a time when judges were so scarce that anyone in his village could serve in that role, illustrating a strong sense of community engagement.

Chris Walker, Wasinger’s Director of Policy and Communications, joined the visit, noting a personal connection to the Spikers through his wife, Anna Littrell, their granddaughter. The detour to The Dairy Bar was a brief but meaningful stop in Wasinger’s day.
