Veteran USDA Inspector and Vietnam War Hero George Henry Veitch Dies at 76
Ruthven, Iowa – George Henry Veitch, a decorated Vietnam War veteran and longtime USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service employee, passed away peacefully at his Ruthven home on the morning of March 30, 2026.
Born May 21, 1949, in Spencer, Iowa, George was the beloved husband of LeAnn J. McGranahan for 44 years, and a cherished family member surrounded by loved ones including his sister, niece, great-nieces, great-nephew, and a menagerie of pets who brought him joy throughout his life.
Service and Commitment From Early Years to Long USDA Career
Known for his strong work ethic, George started early with a paper route and honed his dedication through various jobs, including cleaning and bartending, where he earned rave reviews from employers and patrons alike.
In 1969, George enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division (“Tropical Lightning”). His bravery earned him the Purple Heart along with multiple honors such as the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Army Commendation Medal.
Following his military service, George began a remarkable 46-year career with the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service starting in 1973. His expertise and friendly nature made him an indispensable member of every team he joined across duty stations in Waterloo, Storm Lake, Creswell (Oregon), and Paauilo on Hawaii’s Big Island.
Global Experience and Passion for Wildlife
George’s life included an adventurous two-year work stint in Lusaka, Zambia, during which he contributed his poultry processing expertise to Hybrid Poultry, LTD, a British company. Alongside his wife’s work, the couple traveled extensively across East and Southern Africa, cherishing encounters with native wildlife—giraffes stood out as George’s favorite.
Aloha Spirit and Retirement in Iowa
After relocating to Hawaii’s scenic Hamakua Coast and dedicating 18 years to USDA operations overseeing the Hawaii Beef Producers plant, George embraced the island lifestyle, where he balanced work with daily golf outings and community involvement at the Hamakua Country Club.
Retiring in June 2021, George and LeAnn returned to Iowa to settle in Ruthven, where he continued to spread his signature warmth and generosity among friends and neighbors.
Legacy of Service, Smiles, and Steadfast Friendship
“George always had a ready smile and a story. He was first to lend a hand whenever work was needed,” said a close family member. His deep love for animals, service to country, and work ethic defined a life well lived.
A celebration of life for George Henry Veitch will be held in July 2026. The family requests no donations, but those wishing to honor George’s love of animals are encouraged to contribute to People for Pets in Spencer.
The family is being assisted by Geelan Funeral Home.
George Henry Veitch’s passing marks the loss of a dedicated public servant and treasured veteran whose story of service, resilience, and kindness resonates beyond his Iowa roots, inspiring communities nationwide.
