Multiple Small Fires Ignite Near Fallbrook Prompting Highway Closures

More than a dozen small fires erupted along Hwy 76 Eastbound and I-15 near Fallbrook today, forcing multiple road closures and triggering a rapid response from Cal Fire.

Drivers began reporting flames burning along the roadside just before noon, prompting numerous 9-1-1 calls. Cal Fire San Diego Battalion Chief Thomas Shoots described the confusion early on as multiple calls reported varying fire locations.

“Any fire like this, there’s a lot of confusion initially when we’re getting different people calling 9-1-1 telling us different locations.”

Upon arrival, firefighting crews quickly contained most blazes, many measuring just 20 feet by 20 feet or smaller. Still, the largest fire spread over five acres, demanding concentrated efforts to build containment lines and extinguish hot spots.

Chief Shoots explained the coordinated effort: “We have the fire engines, the hand crews, the engines, and water tenders all working together to try and make that happen.”

There is no confirmed cause yet, but due to the scale and multiple simultaneous blazes, investigators from Cal Fire Riverside and the San Diego Sheriff’s Department have joined the probe into the origins.

Authorities urge local residents to stay prepared for immediate evacuations as wildfire season progresses, highlighting how quickly conditions can worsen.

“It should be a sign for people that you’re ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice and you have a plan for you and your family,” Chief Shoots said. “These things happen quickly. This is going to be the beginning of the next several months of a lot of things like this.”

Residents who witnessed any suspicious activity or information related to the fires are asked to contact the San Diego Sheriff’s non-emergency phone line immediately.

Why This Matters Now

This string of small but rapidly spreading fires underscores the volatile conditions gripping Southern California as wildfire season intensifies. The quick response and containment by Cal Fire teams were critical in preventing major damage, but the episode is a stark warning of how fast multiple ignitions can threaten safety and transportation corridors.

Fallbrook and surrounding communities remain on alert. Travelers along Hwy 76 Eastbound and I-15 should expect delays and stay tuned to official updates due to these closures.

As the months ahead bring higher risks, this event signals the urgent need for precaution and readiness across California’s vulnerable regions.

What To Watch For

Officials will continue investigating fire causes today and in the coming days. Meanwhile, residents should review evacuation plans, prepare emergency supplies, and monitor local news for any new developments.

The California Herald will provide ongoing updates as this situation evolves and more information becomes available from Cal Fire and local authorities.
