Lynnwood Heroes Café Retires 275 Flags in Urgent Ceremony

URGENT UPDATE: Lynnwood Heroes’ Café has just retired 275 American flags in a solemn ceremony held at Beck’s Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Mountlake Terrace. The event, which took place earlier today, underscores the community’s commitment to honoring veterans and the nation’s flag.

The ceremony featured key figures including Gary Walderman, Executive Director of Lynnwood Heroes’ Café, and members of Edmonds American Legion Post 66, including Dan Mullene and Dick Thomas. Together, they participated in a dignified ritual that included folding the flags, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and offering prayers before the flags were respectfully retired by cremation.

These flags, collected over the past several months, were retired following the guidelines set forth in the United States Flag Code. According to the code, flags that are worn out or no longer suitable for display should be retired in a respectful manner, ideally through burning. The ceremony emphasized the importance of this act, reflecting the values and sacrifices embodied by the flag.

“I thank Beck’s for partnering with us to help with this flag retirement,” Walderman stated. “Their support of our veteran organizations is greatly appreciated, and we look forward to collaborating again in the future.”

The emotional event was made possible through the community’s dedication to veterans, with flags being accepted during Heroes’ Café monthly meetings, held on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at New Life Church, located at 6519 188th St. S.W., Lynnwood. Additionally, American Legion Post 66 provides a drop-off bin for worn flags in front of the Old Edmonds Opera House at 515 Dayton St., Edmonds.

Each fold of the U.S. flag during the ceremony symbolically represented significant aspects of the nation’s history and values. The final triangular shape, reminiscent of a soldier’s cocked hat, honors those who have fought for freedom, while the stars-up position aligns with the national motto, “In God We Trust.”

This poignant ceremony not only highlights the importance of flag retirement but also fosters a sense of community and respect for those who serve. As Lynnwood Heroes’ Café continues its mission to support veterans, it invites the public to engage in its monthly meetings and initiatives.

Stay tuned for further updates as this community-driven effort remains crucial for honoring and supporting our veterans.
