Major Winter Storm Slams Hudson Valley: Prepare for Slippery Roads

URGENT UPDATE: A significant winter storm is set to impact the Hudson Valley and parts of Upstate New York starting this evening. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for several counties, warning residents to brace for a slippery commute and hazardous travel conditions.

From 5 p.m. Thursday until noon Friday, areas including Western Ulster County, Eastern Dutchess County, Eastern Columbia County, and Western Greene County are expected to receive a mix of precipitation that could significantly impact road safety. Up to 1 inch of snow and sleet is predicted, along with ice accumulations ranging from one-tenth to one-quarter of an inch.

Residents are urged to exercise caution. “Be prepared for slippery roads. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury,” the National Weather Service stated in its advisory. They recommend slowing down and using caution while traveling.

Precipitation is expected to begin as rain Thursday afternoon, transitioning into a wintry mix of sleet, freezing rain, and snow in northern areas. The wintry mix is forecast to taper off by Friday morning, but the highest ice amounts, potentially reaching around a quarter of an inch, are likely to occur across the southern Adirondacks and the high terrain of western New England.

This weather event marks the second winter storm this week, heightening concerns for commuters and residents alike. As conditions worsen, officials are calling for heightened awareness and preparation.
