Marin Catholic Eliminated in Heartbreaking NorCal Playoff Loss

UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, the No. 8 Marin Catholic Wildcats were eliminated from the NorCal Division-I boys basketball championships, falling to No. 9 King’s Academy of Sunnyvale by a score of 85-73 on February 28, 2023. The matchup took place at Marin Catholic’s home court in Kentfield, where hopes of a fairy-tale finish were dashed.

The loss marks a disappointing end to what has been a remarkable season for Marin Catholic, finishing with an impressive record of 24-5. Despite the setback, first-year coach Kevin Vasquez emphasized the importance of the journey. “What an incredible season,” he stated. “I told the team, don’t let one game take anything away from what we did. It was truly a magical season.”

The Wildcats began the season as underdogs, yet they defied expectations by capturing the MCAL title and progressing to the North Coast Section open division playoffs. Their invitation to the NorCal D-I playoffs followed their commendable performance, with the team aiming for more postseason glory.

Marin Catholic’s senior captain, Joe Hammond, expressed confidence heading into the game. “We were confident coming into this game,” he said. “But they were a very, very skilled team.” Indeed, King’s Academy showcased their prowess, with five players scoring in double figures, led by Adrian Barnett, who recorded an impressive 20 points and nine rebounds.

The Wildcats initially took control of the game, leading 40-37 at halftime, buoyed by three-point sharpshooter Oliver Myers, who netted 11 points in the first half. However, the momentum shifted in the second half as King’s Academy made crucial adjustments. “They took us by surprise a little bit,” Hammond reflected. “But at this level, you have got to work hard.”

As the game progressed, Marin Catholic maintained a narrow lead, even reaching 50-47 midway through the third quarter. However, King’s Academy surged back, capitalizing on fastbreak opportunities and rebounding dominance, ultimately pulling ahead in the final minutes. “We lost to a very good team without a doubt,” Vasquez acknowledged. “But we were ahead at halftime and then we couldn’t get a stop or make a shot.”

Other notable performances for Marin included senior Micah Pierce, who contributed 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. The emotional toll of the defeat was palpable in the locker room, with many players visibly upset. “There were a lot of sad kids in that locker room,” Vasquez shared. “But when they look back on the season without emotion, they will realize what they accomplished.”

The Wildcats’ journey may have come to an end, but the experience gained this season promises to pay dividends in the years to come. As Marin Catholic reflects on this extraordinary season, they remain a team to watch in future competitions.
