The University of Hawaii’s swimming and diving teams achieved remarkable success by securing eight awards at the Big West Conference Championships held recently in Houston. The standout performances included recognition for both coaches and athletes, highlighting the university’s dominance in the sport.
Swimming and Diving Awards
The accolades presented on Friday showcased the exceptional talent and leadership within the UH swimming and diving programs. Steve Allnutt was named both the Men’s and Women’s Coach of the Year, while Brandon Blaisdell received the title of Men’s and Women’s Diving Coach of the Year. Individual honors included Karol Ostrowski, a graduate student from Strachoin, Poland, who was named Men’s Swimmer of the Year, and Macie Wheeler, a sophomore from Adelaide, Australia, who earned the distinction of Women’s Diver of the Year.
Additional awards went to Oliver Wignall of Southampton, England, recognized as the Men’s Freshman Diver of the Year, and Keira Chandler from Mountain House, California, who received the Women’s Freshman Diver of the Year award. This strong showing at the conference championships demonstrates the depth of talent present within the UH teams.
Softball Team Faces Challenges
In contrast, the UH softball team faced difficulties at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, California. The team suffered two losses, including a no-hitter against the sixth-ranked Nebraska, who defeated Hawaii 13-0 in just five innings. In the game, Nebraska’s Hannah Camenzind not only pitched a no-hitter but also excelled at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs.
In their second match, the team faced Oregon State, where Amelia Streuber pitched five shutout innings, leading Oregon State to a 2-1 victory over Hawaii. Milan Ah Yat managed to score for the Rainbow Wahine in the seventh inning, while Taryn Irimata provided three innings of scoreless relief. With a current record of 5-8, the team has now lost six consecutive games, raising concerns about their offensive performance.
Cheer Team Competes at Nationals
In a more positive light, the UH cheerleading team is set to compete in the USA Collegiate Championships this weekend in Anaheim, California. Under the guidance of coach Mike Baker, a squad of 18 male and female cheerleaders will showcase their skills. Nearly 1,000 student-athletes from 15 divisions will participate in the event. Semifinals are scheduled for March 15, 2024, at 14:15 local time, with finals taking place the following day. Teams will be judged based on various criteria, including crowd interaction, partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, tumbling, and overall impression.
Beach Volleyball Struggles
The challenges continued for the No. 16 Hawaii beach volleyball team as they faced two top-five opponents at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic in Waikiki. The SandBows were defeated 4-1 by fourth-ranked USC, with the only victory coming from the pairing of Emily Heintzelman and Sydney Miller at the No. 4 position. Later, Hawaii faced second-ranked Stanford, again losing 4-1, with Kristen Serrano and Kiera Cornman securing the team’s sole win at No. 5. Following these matches, the SandBows’ record now stands at 1-3.
As the various teams continue their seasons, the University of Hawaii remains a focal point for both commendable achievements and challenges in the competitive landscape of college athletics.
