Corning City Council to Reconsider West St. Closure Plan Today

URGENT UPDATE: The Corning City Council is set to meet TODAY at 5:30 p.m. to discuss a potential road closure on West Street. The meeting will take place at 794 Third St. and is open to the public, providing an opportunity for community members to voice their opinions.

At this critical meeting, the council will revisit a previously postponed closure of West Street between Marin Street and South Street. The proposed closure, initially discussed in November 2025, aims to facilitate construction at West Street Elementary School. Following community feedback, the council previously directed city staff to suggest alternative options to the school district for construction staging.

New reports indicate that the school district has revised its request. The updated plan would significantly limit the road closure to the summer construction period from June 5 to August 14. During this time, West Street would only be closed during the day, reopening daily at 5:00 p.m., with overnight access maintained until 6:00 a.m. the following morning. City staff are recommending approval of this modified plan, which aims to minimize disruption for residents.

In addition to the road closure discussion, the council will conduct a public workshop on a proposed amendment to the Corning municipal code. This amendment seeks to address long-standing issues with nuisance conditions in the community. The draft ordinance aims to clarify definitions, standardize enforcement processes, and provide city officials with the authority to bypass certain enforcement steps when necessary.

City staff have highlighted that the proposed changes are in alignment with similar ordinances in Red Bluff, Orland, and Tehama County. This workshop will allow residents to engage directly with council members, ask questions, and provide valuable input.

As the meeting unfolds, community members are encouraged to participate and stay informed about these significant local developments. The decisions made today could have lasting impacts on traffic flow and neighborhood quality of life in Corning.

Stay tuned for updates on the outcomes of this pivotal council meeting.
