The landscape of television technology is changing significantly as LG has officially announced the discontinuation of its 8K TV production. According to reports from FlatPanelsHD, the LG Z3, launched in 2023, marks the last model to be manufactured in this resolution. This decision leaves Samsung as the sole remaining manufacturer of 8K TVs, although the company did not feature any 8K models in its 2026 lineup revealed at the recent CES event.
LG’s announcement is characterized as a “temporary hold,” indicating a potential return to 8K production should consumer interest revive. However, the move is drawing parallels to the decline of 3D TVs, which saw a similar halt in manufacturing in 2017. The rapid ascent of 4K technology appears to have overshadowed the demand for 8K, with many consumers finding the price tags of 8K TVs prohibitively high.
The absence of a dedicated broadcast or disc format for 8K content has further hindered its adoption. As noted by ZDNet, viewers can only currently access 8K through upscaled 4K content, while many 8K models lack the capability to process compressed 8K signals via HDMI 2.1.
A recent study by Cambridge University highlighted that, at typical viewing distances of around 2.4 meters (about 8 feet), the human eye struggles to distinguish between 4K and 8K resolutions. This finding suggests that the benefits of 8K are largely imperceptible for everyday consumers, leading manufacturers to reconsider their priorities.
With the retreat from 8K, television manufacturers are now shifting their focus towards enhancing picture quality rather than simply increasing resolution. The emphasis is on achieving brighter displays, deeper contrasts, and richer colors, along with improved upscaling and processing capabilities for lower-resolution content.
In addition to this strategic pivot, LG announced last month the launch of its “Designed for LG Gaming Portal” certification program. This initiative is designed to optimize the gaming experience by improving latency, connectivity, and interoperability between controllers and the LG Gaming Portal gameplay experience.
As the industry evolves, it remains to be seen whether consumer interest will shift back toward 8K technology or if 4K will continue to dominate the market. The competition among manufacturers is likely to intensify as they innovate and adapt to changing consumer preferences in the years to come.
