UPDATE: In a bold response to the recent winter storm, New York City is using hot tubs to tackle the snow crisis that has left parts of the city buried. As of February 21, 2023, the aftermath of a significant snowfall, totaling 12 inches, is still causing chaos on the streets, with bus stops and crosswalks rendered nearly impassable.
With snow piling up and little hope for natural melting, the city’s Sanitation Department has taken an innovative approach. They deployed the Trecan Combustion 60-PD Snowmelter near the southern tip of Manhattan on Wednesday morning, aiming to expedite snow removal in a city that prides itself on efficiency. This bright orange snow melter, resembling a dump truck, began operation shortly after its arrival from a city garage, taking only 30 minutes to warm up.
“This is a significant step towards restoring normalcy in the city,” said Javier Lojan, acting sanitation commissioner. “We have enough snow to cover a football field, so using this technology helps us manage the situation effectively.”
The snow melter operates almost continuously, with brief pauses every eight hours to prevent overheating, according to spokesperson Joshua Goodman. A front-end loader was seen loading the machine with approximately half a ton of snow, which was quickly transformed into steam and drainage through an open sewer manhole.
As snow continues to obstruct daily life, this solution highlights the urgent need for cities to adapt innovative strategies when faced with climate challenges. Residents can expect to see more of these snow melters deployed across the city in the days to come, ensuring that New York City remains functional and accessible during adverse weather conditions.
