West Point Town Manager John Edwards Announces Retirement

The town manager of West Point, John Edwards, has officially announced his retirement after nearly 15 years of service. During a Town Council meeting on January 13, 2024, Edwards submitted his formal notice, confirming a decision he had discussed with council members previously. He plans to utilize his remaining leave starting March 1, 2024, with his official retirement date set for July 1, 2024.

Edwards expressed confidence in his successor, stating, “I am very comfortable you will all be in good hands with Steve Hudgins leading the team.” His tenure as town manager began in August 2011, during which he managed the day-to-day operations of West Point, a community with approximately 3,500 residents.

Career Overview and Contributions

Before taking on the role in West Point, Edwards had an extensive career in public service. He grew up in nearby Smithfield, where he started as a part-time public works employee. His career path included positions as a planner for Isle of Wight County, assistant county administrator, and emergency services coordinator in Surry County. Edwards also worked as a planner for Newport News before stepping into the management role at West Point.

Throughout his career, Edwards has remained active in community services. He has participated in local Scouts and held leadership positions in various regional organizations. His contributions include chairing the Middle Peninsula Regional Airport and the Middle Peninsula Chesapeake Bay Public Access Authority. Additionally, he has served on the Pamunkey Regional Library Board of Trustees and the Middle Peninsula Planning District Commission.
