Dolly Parton Meets Beatles Legends: A Journey Through Music History

Dolly Parton’s recent collaboration with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on the song “Let It Be” for her 2023 album, Rockstar, not only showcased her enduring talent but also rekindled memories of her earlier encounters with the iconic Beatles members. Parton, who turns 80 on January 19, 2024, revealed that she reached out to McCartney with a heartfelt note through their managers, expressing her desire to collaborate. “I just sent them a love note,” she shared with NPR.

The collaboration was a significant milestone for Parton, who had already recorded the track when inspiration struck her to contact McCartney. He graciously agreed, and soon after, Starr joined in, marking a historic reunion of music royalty from both Nashville and England.

Memorable Encounters in the 1970s

Parton’s history with The Beatles extends back to the 1970s, when she first met McCartney and his wife, Linda McCartney, on June 16, 1974. The couple was in Nashville for a six-week visit, during which they recorded several non-album singles with their band, Wings. One highlight of their trip was attending the Grand Masters Fiddling Contest at Opryland.

During intermission, they were invited backstage, where they met Parton and country music star Porter Wagoner. This encounter was particularly significant, as it coincided with the last appearance of Parton and Wagoner as a duo. Their partnership had begun in 1967, and just a week prior to this meeting, they had performed their final concert together. The split ultimately inspired Parton to pen her classic hit “I Will Always Love You” in gratitude to Wagoner for his support.

A Surprising Dinner with Ringo Starr

A few years later, Parton met Ringo Starr through Ken Mansfield, the former U.S. manager of Apple Records. In the late 1970s, Mansfield sought to introduce Nashville stars to the rock scene in Los Angeles, which had become dominated by rock music. Parton and fellow country artist Waylon Jennings were among those who made the move.

Mansfield, a lifelong fan of both country and rock music, arranged a surprise dinner invitation for Starr and Parton, each unaware that the other would be present. According to Mansfield’s memoir, The White Book, the evening was meant to foster a relaxed atmosphere for these two music legends to connect.

However, the night took an unexpected turn when producer Stewart Levine crashed the intimate gathering. Known for his work with renowned artists like B.B. King and Lionel Richie, Levine was also a devoted admirer of Parton. Despite Mansfield’s intention for a small guest list, Levine insisted on joining, leading to a comical confrontation at Mansfield’s home.

As the men argued, Parton appeared and recognized Levine, expressing her admiration for his work. She exclaimed that she never expected to meet him, jokingly adding that she might leave out of embarrassment. The moment, filled with laughter, highlighted Parton’s charisma and ability to create unforgettable memories, even amidst unexpected chaos.

Both encounters with McCartney and Starr not only exemplify Parton’s connections within the music industry but also showcase her unique charm that has captivated audiences for decades. Through her collaborations and personal interactions, she continues to bridge generations of music lovers, proving that the power of music transcends time and place.
