Skating Club of Boston Celebrates Three Olympians for 2026 Games

The Skating Club of Boston has achieved a significant milestone as three of its skaters have secured their places on Team USA for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Maxim Naumov, Spencer Howe, and Emily Chan clinched their spots following a competitive skate-off at the U.S. Nationals held in St. Louis, Missouri. Each athlete is now poised to represent their country on the Olympic stage.

Maxim Naumov’s journey to the Olympics is particularly poignant. He carries not only his skates but also the legacy of his parents, both former Olympic figure skaters from Russia, who tragically passed away last year. In a heartfelt statement, Naumov expressed, “I would not be sitting here without the unimaginable work effort and love from my parents.” He further emphasized the emotional weight of his selection, stating, “It means absolutely everything to me to fulfill the dream we collectively had as a family.”

Both Howe and Chan, who form a pairs team, also demonstrated remarkable resilience. Despite facing challenges during their short program, they rebounded with a stellar free skate that secured their Olympic berths. Howe shared his perspective on the experience, saying, “The message I got from this competition is when God wants something for you, he has got it for you, and we stayed faithful through the whole process.”

Olympic Aspirations Amid Challenges

While the achievements of Naumov, Howe, and Chan are celebrated, not all skaters have made the Olympic cut. The current U.S. champions, Misha Mistrofanov and Alisa Efimova, will not compete in Milan due to immigration issues affecting Efimova’s passport status. This setback highlights the unpredictable nature of elite sports, where personal circumstances can alter the course of an athlete’s career.

For those who have qualified, the focus now shifts to preparation for the Olympic competition, which begins on February 6, 2026. Besides Naumov, Howe, and Chan, the U.S. delegation includes other notable skaters such as Amber Glenn, Isabeau Levito, and Alysa Liu in the women’s category, alongside Ilia Malinin and Andrew Torgashev competing in the men’s. The pairs team of Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea will also contribute to a strong and diverse representation for the United States.

Naumov, reflecting on his journey, remarked, “My parents, what we talked about and how much we discussed this through my entire life, and how much it means to us, and how much the Olympics is part of our family. I thought of them immediately. I wish they could be here to experience it with me, but I do feel their presence, and they are with me.”

As the athletes prepare for the upcoming challenges, their stories resonate with dedication and familial bonds, reminding us of the profound impact of both triumphs and tribulations in competitive sports. The Skating Club of Boston not only celebrates individual success but also highlights the importance of community and support in the pursuit of Olympic dreams.
